Saving Your Belongings, Not Just the Building

When mold grows in a room, spores settle on everything in it: upholstered furniture, clothing in closets, stored boxes, books, electronics and children's toys. If those items go back into a freshly remediated space without being cleaned, they can re-contaminate it and keep the musty smell alive.

Contents mold remediation is the process of sorting, cleaning and protecting what you own. We decide item by item what can be cleaned, what should be professionally laundered and what is not worth saving, and we document every decision for you and your insurance adjuster.

Clean, Launder or Discard

Hard, non-porous items like metal, glass and sealed wood clean well with HEPA vacuuming and damp wiping. Semi-porous items such as finished furniture usually can be saved. Porous items with visible growth, like mattresses, pressboard and moldy carpet, generally cannot.

When Contents Cleaning Is Needed

We recommend contents remediation whenever visible mold growth or heavy spore levels were found in a room where belongings are stored. Common situations include:

  • Basement storage areas after a sump pump failure or groundwater flooding
  • Closets that share a wall with a leaking bathroom or exterior wall
  • Bedrooms with mold on the walls or ceiling from poor ventilation
  • Estate cleanouts and vacant homes that sat closed up for months
  • Homes being prepared for sale after a mold inspection report

Our Contents Process

We set up a clean zone outside the containment, then carry items out one at a time. Each piece is HEPA vacuumed inside the work area, wiped, inspected and wrapped before it leaves. Upholstery and rugs may be sent for off-site cleaning. Nothing is returned to a room until that room has passed its own cleaning and air check.

For families with asthma, allergies or a weakened immune system, we take a stricter line on porous items and will walk you through the trade-offs before anything is thrown away.

Contents Mold Remediation FAQ

Can moldy clothes be saved?
Usually yes. Most clothing and linens can be professionally laundered or dry cleaned to remove spores and odor. Items with heavy visible growth or long-term water damage may not recover fully.
Is moldy furniture safe to keep?
Solid wood, metal and finished furniture can typically be cleaned. Upholstered pieces depend on how deep the growth goes. A mattress or sofa with visible mold inside the padding is generally not worth saving.
Do you store my belongings during remediation?
We can move items to a clean area of the house or arrange short-term storage while the affected rooms are remediated.
Does insurance pay for contents cleaning?
If the water loss is covered, contents cleaning and replacement of unsalvageable items are often covered too. Our photo inventory helps the adjuster process that part of the claim.
